HOW IT ALL BEGAN..

It was back in 2012 when four surfers, who were visiting Midigama on their holidays, came up with the idea to build a skatepark so they had something to do on the days when there were no waves. Rutger Embrechts, Arno Van Elsen and Brazilian brothers Henrique Figueiredo and Bernardo Figueiredo thought it would be a great idea to construct the skatepark on one of their local friend's land, so his family could have a further source of revenue.

With the help of friends and volunteers from the village, money donated from local businesses and friends, and 150 bags of concrete, Sri Lanka’s first skatepark was completed in 2013. With very few locations for skateboarding in Sri Lanka, Midigama Skatepark soon became a popular spot and has been visited by people from all over the world.

Over the years the skatepark has developed into a place where locals and tourists can hang out in the chill out areas and skate. Skateboards are provided for free and there’s a surf shop on site and surfboard repair and rental service.

We’re really proud that the skatepark is still going with support from the local community and international skaters alike.

Come and visit and see for yourself!
